I looked in the discussion and couldn't find this. What would cause this to appear?
Open the EPSON Scan application. I was aware of the file destination setting under Configuration button on the bottom middle of the EPSON Scan application. There is another buried setting under the Scan button that differed from the setting under Configuration. 'EPSON xxxx PLUGIN unable to write to file' (Where 'xxxx' is the file type you selected to save the scan as e.g. JPEG, PDF, TIF*, BMP.) This issue can occur if the local user's 'Temp' folder does not have enough contiguous file space to be used as the scanner software's 'work area'. This is not to be confused with RAM or HDD space.
Ensures you have the latest drivers and software updates to make your PC run better and safer.
This has happened to me a couple of times when I am simultaneously scanning with Epson Scan and editing large files in Photoshop. (I usually have other programs running as well.) Apparently Epson Scan is not making good use of virtual memory. If I close Photoshop and run the scan again it works fine.
The problem could also occur if you're trying to write in a directory to which you do not have proper permissions, or if you're out of disk space, etc.

Thanks, I was doing exactly that. It works well sometimes and not others so I guess one thing at a time.
I open photoshop and did that too, but even when closed i sometimes get the same thing. But it seems like most of the problems with this scanner are self correcting so I'll just have to wait and see
