Win 7 mapping to NAS only works by IP, not UNC. Ask Question. Up vote 0 down vote favorite. UNC shares to our network server (W2K12) and an older Synology NAS (running DSM 3.x) work fine. Configure WINS, DNS. Configure the firewall on Windows 7. If you configure the VLAN and the station is connected to the Windows 7.

DiskStation not found on LAN

Feb 18, 2018 - So, here is a simple tutorial to set up the DNS on your Synology box. The resolution tab in the DNS Server configuration has everything. Set up DHCP and network routing within LAN. Network options such as DHCP server and network routing are available at Network Center > Local Network.

So I put a RackStation 814+ on my home LAN with 4x 8TB REDs in it. Running the latest DSM 6.1.2-15132 Update 1

I cannot PING of find the Synology on the LAN. I know it's IP address, and can PING that, it's just a name resolution issue.

When I open up my Win10 PC, and go to Network, I only see my PC under 'Computer'.

  • Under 'Media Devices' I see my Sonos AND the Synology.

  • Under 'Other Devices' I see my TV's and the Synology.

Find Synology Server

My network settings on my PC are set to 'private' and I have Network & Sharing enabled..

I checked the DSM settings, and under Control Panel / File Services / Advanced, the SSDP is enabled.

I have a public SSL certificate installed, a static IP address, and a FQDN setup. I have enabled HTTP >HTTPS redirection under CP / Network / DSM Settings. Don't think this is related...

ANY ideas how to get the Synology to 'advertise' itself on the LAN more?

I don't know if this is just a badly written page in the manual but it doesn't cover what the Enable WINS server checkbox does.
Advanced Options
WINS server
If the local network has a WINS server installed, specify the IP address. The NAS will automatically register its name and IP address with WINS service. If you have a WINS server on your network and want to use this server, enter the WINS server IP. Do not turn on this option if you are not sure about the settings.

I understand that if your network has a WINS server then you'd check the USE SPECIFIED WINS SERVER checkbox and enter in the IP address of that server. But the 3rd sentence doesn't make any sense as it basically repeats what is said in the 1st sentence and doesn't cover at all what the Enable WINS server checkbox is for. Then they go on to say that if you don't understand what the option is for then don't use it. How about telling us what the option is for, as it seems like a totally redundant option button if you go by what is inside the manual
OR is this an option to have the QNAS server act as a WINS server as well?? That would be a totally cool option as then you can do name resolution at home without the need for running a windows server.
